Slidell, La. - The Tulane women's sand volleyball team was officially welcomed as Green Wave's 16th sport during a pre-game ceremony today, but the team wasn't able to come up with a victory in its second-ever match, falling to Conference USA rival UAB, 5-0, at Coconut Beach Volleyball Courts at The Dock of Slidell.

Playing in windy conditions with overcast skies and temperatures in the low 60's, Tulane's 2012 women's volleyball team features players making the transition from indoors to outdoors and is still in search of its first-ever win after falling to 0-2 with the loss. UAB, however, notched the first win in its inaugural season today and improved to 1-1.

"We didn't get the result we wanted today, but I think UAB was very good competition for us and I think as a team we got a lot better this week and really improved from our opening match against Florida State last week," Acting head coach Jaye Loyd said. "We're looking a lot better and I saw a lot of positive things from today's match."

The teams started with matches at the No. 4 and No. 5 flights to open the contest. The Blazers' team of Kate Morrell and Ally Slaughter downed TU's Olivia Utt and Azarri Badawi, 21-18, 210 and the fourth spot and then increased their lead to 2-0 when Becca Howard and Michele Simmons got past Milica Jovic and Shefali Arora at five, 21-14, 21-19.

After a brief intermission, the last three flights began with UAB's Sam Serley and Alison Woods topped Tulane's Cori Martone and Grace Weaver at the No. 1 slot, 21-11, 21-8 to clinch the victory for the visitors.

Rachel Fairbanks and Kiriana Hirini defeated Anna Wruck and Lilly Wolfe at the No. 3 spot, 21-14, 21-18. TU's Nikki Osuna and Milena Dragovic won their first set against Kirsten Gallagher and Heather Thomas, 21-16, but the UAB tandem took the second set 21-13 and then claimed the match 15-9.

Wolfe led the Wave with 13 digs, while Wruck was credited with 20 kills.

Tulane returns to action at Florida State on March 13, at Stetson on March 14, at UAB on April 6, at Mercer on April 7 and at Florida Gulf Coast on April 13. The Green Wave will close out the regular season on April 14 when they participate in the Siesta Key (Fla.) Tournament. The 2012 AVCA Championship is slated for April 27 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
