HOUSTON, Texas - Despite a late second-half goal from senior Jessica Mendez, a comeback mounted by the Tulane women's soccer team fell short, as the Green Wave were tripped by Conference USA for Houston, 2-1, Sunday afternoon.

Houston took a 1-0 lead into the break on an unassisted goal by junior transfer Sophia Munday at the 36:12 mark. Mundy, who fired four shots at Tulane keeper Megan Morey, and the Cougars held an offensive edge through the contest, out-shooting the Green Wave 10-4 in the opening period and 19-6 for the game.

The two teams battled defensively as the scored remained 1-0 until the clock hit 62:48 when Mundy served a ball to Jennifer Dry. Dry then knocked in what proved to be the game winner from 20 yards out as the Cougars extended to a 2-0 advantage.

As the clock wound down, Tulane started building a comeback. Junior Lauren Peek passed the ball off to outside midfielder Mendez who won a one-on-one battle with Houston goalkeeper Stephanie Pucek for her second goal of the season, putting the Wave on the board with 5:38 remaining in the game. That was all the Cougar defense would allow, keeping the Green Wave offense at bay down the stretch to hang on for the 2-1 win.

"Jessica Mendez was our player of the game," Tulane coach Betsy Anderson said. "She created several attacks for us and had some good possessions today.

"Sophia Mundy had a good game for Houston. She is a very good player that plays with a lot of flair."

Tulane (1-10, 1-7) wraps up the regular season on Oct. 28, hosting league-leading UTEP on Senior Day at the Green Wave's "home" field in College Station, Texas.
