Strong 2nd Half Not Enough As Women's Soccer Falls To SMU, 2-0
Oct. 16, 2005
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Tulane University women's soccer team played a solid second half, and senior Megan Morey came off the bench to keep SMU scoreless over the final 56-plus minutes, but two first half goals spelled doom as the Green Wave lost a 2-0 decision to the Conference USA foe Mustangs Sunday afternoon at the Aggie Soccer Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University. Morey replaced freshman Kathryn Alario with just under 13 minutes to play in the first half, and tallied a save during her time between the pipes. A pair of Mustang (10-4-1, 4-1-0) goals in the first 20-plus minutes were the difference as the Green Wave fell to 1-8 on the season and 1-5 in C-USA action. "Today was a respectable score against a good opponent, and I thought we played very well in the second half," Tulane head coach Betsy Anderson said. "Tony Schlapprizzi was our Player of the Game today. She played well defensively against the best forwards we've seen so far this season." The Mustangs wasted little time getting on the board as midfielder Kristen Moran took a give-and-go pass from defender Kimber Bailey and beat Alario from point-blank range in the 18th minute to give SMU the only goal it would need. Bailey got her second assist of the day a little over three minutes later when she and Jena Lind combined to create a breakaway shot attempt by Olivia O'Rear to account for the final score. Tulane midfielders Kali Miller and Jackie Obert had two shots apiece while Katie Somadelis and Jessica Traver each had one. SMU goalkeeper Ashley Gunter was up to the challenge, though, and tallied four saves to collect the complete-game shutout.
The Green Wave return to action on Friday, Oct. 21, when they travel to Houston for a showdown with C-USA newcomer Rice at 7 p.m. at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium. Friday's contest is the first of two games Tulane will play in the city of Houston as the Green Wave will battle the University of Houston on Sunday with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. --www.tulanegreenwave.com-- |
