Women's Soccer Falls To C-USA Foe Tulsa, 2-0
Oct. 14, 2005 COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Tulsa took advantage of an own goal in the first half and earned another on their own in the second as the Tulane University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to the Golden Hurricane Friday evening at the Aggie Soccer Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University. Green Wave junior midfielder Jessica Traver was named Player of the Game and senior goalkeeper Megan Morey posted three saves, but it was not enough as the Tulsa defense kept Tulane off the board for the full 90 minutes. With the loss, Tulane falls to 1-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 in C-USA play. Tulsa, meanwhile, improves to 7-6-2 on the year and 2-2-0 in league action. "Tonight was disappointing," Tulane head coach Betsy Anderson said. "In the first half, we controlled about 85 percent of the possession and had the momentum of the game in the beginning of the second, but we have got to be able to finish on our chances. "JT was our Player of the Game tonight. She continuously got in behind the defense and served good balls into the box. We just have to capitalize on those opportunities in order to be successful." The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first 19-plus minutes of play, but in the 20th minute, a defensive lapse by the Green Wave gave Tulsa a 1-0 advantage. Golden Hurricane forward Nicole Macia served a ball into the box but junior defender Toni Schlapprizzi was able to locate and attempted to clear it with a header. The pass, however, glanced off Schlapprizzi's forehead and bounced over Morey in goal to give Tulsa the only score it would need. The game remained at 1-0 well into the second half, but Tulsa would ice the game in the 77th minute when forward Kate Ward took a loose ball in the middle of the box and beat Morey to the high right corner to account for the final score.
Junior midfielder Jackie Obert led the Tulane attack with a pair of shots and senior defender Leah Peterson added one of her own. Peterson's shot sailed high and Obert was stopped twice by Tulsa goalkeeper Meredith Hart, who recorded the shutout. The Green Wave return to action on Sunday, Oct. 16, when they play host to C-USA foe SMU at 1 p.m. at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. Admission is free, but donations will be welcomed at the gate. |
