New Orleans - Three days after becoming just the fourth golfer in school history to win a second tournament title, senior Maribel Lopez Porras was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week following her historic in at the Alamo Invitational on Tuesday, as it was announced by the league.
This is the second C-USA Golfer of the Week award for Porras. She received her first weekly honor on March 2, 2011, and she is the second Green Wave golfer to earn the accolade this season. Sophomore Gemma Dryburgh was tabbed for the same award earlier this season on Sept. 19.
This past week, Porras completed the event with a tournament record 7-under 209 total and led the Green Wave to a third place finish with a 1-under 863 total at the Briggs Ranch Golf Course in San Antonio, Texas. Her 209 was also just one stroke shy of the school record of 208 set earlier this season by Dryburgh.
With the victory, Porras, who hails from Bogota, Colombia, became just the fourth golfer in the history of the Tulane program to win two or more individual titles. She claimed the 2012 Conference USA Championship for her first individual medalist honor. Porras is the first golfer to win two titles since Liliana Alvarez won a pair during her career with the Wave from 2002-05 and joins former standouts Carolin Landmann and Tulane Athletics Hall of Famer Pam Buff as the only TU golfers with two or more titles.
Porras carded a 3-under 69 on the final day to go along with her 4-under 68 during the opening round and an even-par outing on Monday. She completed the event with 12 birdies and concluded the fall shooting par or better in four of nine rounds.
