New Orleans - For the second straight week, a Tulane golfer has received Conference USA's Golfer of the Week award, and this week's recipient is sophomore Silvia Garces, who picked the league's weekly honor for the first time in her young career, as it was announced today by the conference office.
Sophomore Emily Penttila received the league's first weekly golf honor of the 2013 fall campaign after she finished sixth at the Dale McNamara NCAA Fall Preview.
Garces, who hails from Cali, Colombia, carded a 2-under 140 total for a runner-up finish and helped the 18th-ranked Green Wave to a third place finish at the rain-shortened Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships this past weekend at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
She turned in the best finish of her brief career and also tied for her lowest round as well. Garces was steady throughout the final round and recorded a pair of birdies on two of the three par 5's on the backside (No. 11, No. 15) as she was coming down the home stretch. Garces finished even during Friday's opening round, while Saturday's second round was cancelled due to inclement weather.
Tulane combined for a 5-over 289 during Sunday's final round and completed the 36-hole event with an 11-over 579 total, falling just behind team champion Arkansas and runner-up South Carolina, but did finish ahead of host Tennessee, Notre Dame, Louisville and UCF.
The Wave will return to action at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, Oct. 13-15, at the University of Texas Golf Course in Austin, Texas.
