New Orleans - Tulane University sophomore Emily Penttila has been named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week after she posted a sixth-place overall finish with a 1-under 209 total (71-67-71) last week at the Dale McNamara NCAA Fall Preview.
Penttila earned the conference's weekly honor for the first time this season and for the second time in her career. She collected the accolade as a freshman this past spring on Feb. 27.
Playing in the premier fall tournament in women's collegiate golf and among a field that has combined for 12 national championships, Penttila effort helped lead the 18th-ranked Green Wave to a 10th place effort, its best showing at the prestigious event. Tulane finished ahead of No. 9 Vanderbilt, No. 15 North Carolina, and No. 17 Georgia.
During Tuesday's second round, Penttila not only tied for the best individual round (Duke's Laetitia Beck), with a 3-under 67, but was the only golfer in the field to play error-free golf and was tied for first place by the end of the round.
Penttila cemented her place among the nation's top individuals on the same course that will host the NCAA Championships next May.
Tulane returns to action this weekend at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships, hosted by the University of Tennessee at the Cherokee Country Club, Sept. 20-22.
