New Orleans - For the second straight year, Tulane's golf team staked its claim as the best women's collegiate golf squad in the state of Louisiana by rolling through the annual Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) postseason awards.
The Green Wave collected the specialty awards with junior Janine Fellows receiving the LSWA Player of the Year award, while rookie Maribel Lopez Porras was named the LSWA Freshman of the Year and John Thomas Horton was tabbed the LSWA Coach of the Year, and Tulane placed three players on the All-Louisiana first team.
"We are very grateful to the members of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association for voting for our players and we appreciate this wonderful recognition," Tulane head coach John Thomas Horton said. "There are many great players and programs in the state of Louisiana and we are honored to be a part of these awards."
A native of Houston, Texas, Fellows' Louisiana Player of the Year award, followed up her 2010 Conference USA Player of the Year honor and she was also named to the All-Louisiana first team. Fellows was a second-team All-Louisiana performer a year ago.
This past season, she concluded the 2009-10 campaign as the nation's 60th ranked player and led the Green Wave with a 74.39 stroke average. An All C-USA first team pick, Fellows registered nine rounds of par or better, including a career-low 4-under 67 during the final round of the C-USA Championships, which marked the championship record for the lowest individual round, and had five top-10 finishes, including the individual title at the Kinderlou Forest Challenge, and she finished as the runner-up at the Conference USA Championships.
Porras, who hails from Bogota, Colombia, completed her freshman season ranked 158th in the nation. She produced five rounds of par or better, including a career-best 4-under 68 during the second round of the Windy City Collegiate, and she posted two top-20 finishes with a career-best 8th place showing at the Conference USA Championships, a 12-place finish at the Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate and an 18th place effort at the Windy City Collegiate. She was a third team All C-USA performer.

Off the course, six of his seven players are either members of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, earned the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal or is a member of Tulane's 3.0 Club. The group has also participated in numerous community service activities.
