New Orleans - Tulane senior golfer Maribel Lopez Porras has been named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week after posting a second place individual finish and leading the 24th-ranked Green Wave to a runner-up finish at the LSU Golf Classic last weekend in Baton Rouge, it was announced today by the league office.
Porras, who hails from Bogota, Colombia, earned the league's weekly award for the second time this season, and the third time in her career. She also received the honor on Nov. 1, 2012, following her first place finish at the Alamo Invitational.
Last week, Porras shot a 5-over 221 (71-74-76) to tie for individual runner-up honors and helped the Green Wave to a runner-up finish behind No. 8 Arkansas. The event featured nine ranked teams and 14 ranked individuals.
Porras, who is ranked 69th nationally, finished behind the nation's 38th-ranked player (Arkansas' Emily Tubert) and tied with the 21st-ranked player in the country (LSU's Madelene Sagstom). Porras was tied for first following the opening round after recording a 1-under 71 and posted her second top five finish and fourth top-20 effort this season, while her 71 was her seventh round of par or better in 2012-13.
The Green Wave notched its third runner-up finish of the year, and second out of three tournaments this spring, and has now posted a Top-5 finish in five of seven tournaments this year. Tulane also finished ahead of two teams ranked ahead of it, including No. 18 Georgia and No. 20 North Carolina State.
Tulane returns to action at the Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate, April 5-7, at the Ole Miss Golf Club in Oxford, Miss.
