NEW ORLEANS - Tulane University golfers Lindsay Hulwick and Chris Wheeler both earned February Player of the Month honors from Conference USA Wednesday as Hulwick was named the women's golf player of the month for the league while Wheeler shared the monthly honor for C-USA men with Southern Miss' Shane Rushing.
Hulwick and Wheeler, both sophomores, claimed their first career titles during February to win the C-USA recognitions.
Littleton, Colorado product Hulwick won her first career title at the Tulane Invitational, played at English Turn Golf & Country Club, with a score of six-over par 222 over 54 holes. After firing rounds of 77 and 74 in windy and cold conditions on the tournament's first day, Hulwick shot a one-under par 71 in the final round to clinch the victory. Tulane also won the team title in the event for its third tournament win of the year.
This week, Hulwick followed her tournament-winning performance by tying for 20th, and helping the Green Wave to a third-place finish in the 19-team field, at the Verizon "Mo"morial Invitational at the Blackhorse Golf Club in Cypress, Texas. Tulane, which is ranked 15th in the latest GolfWeek women's college poll, returns to action next week at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational.
Wheeler, a native of Allen, Texas, won the Beau Chene College Classic by shooting 12-under par 204 at the par 72 Beau Chene Golf & Country Club in Mandeville. Wheeler, who owns a scoring average of 71.7 so far in 2002-03, fired a career-low seven-under par 65 in the tournament's first round to tie the tournament's 18-hole record. He followed that with rounds of 70 and 69 to win the event by two strokes.
The C-USA honor is the second of the week for Wheeler, who was named the College Golfer of the Week by Golf World Magazine in its March 7th issue.
Wheeler followed his win at Beau Chene by tying for sixth this past weekend at the LSU Spring Invitational with rounds of 72, 73 and 71 to finish at even-par 216 on the University Club course. Wheeler and the Green Wave men are next in action at the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championships March 17-18 in Aiken, S.C.
