New Orleans - Fresh off her best showing of the 2010-11 campaign with a fifth place finish at the 2011 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship, Tulane sophomore Maribel Lopez Porras has been rewarded for her effort as she was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week today by the league office. This is the first C-USA weekly honor of her young career.

Porras, a native of Bogota, Colombia, helped the 15th-ranked Green Wave to a third-place showing behind top-ranked Alabama and second-ranked USC this past week.

Porras, who entered the event ranked No. 56 according to Golfstat.com, fired a pair of 1-under 71s during her first two rounds and added an even-par score during her final round to card a 2-under 214 total, which was good enough for a fifth place finish. The tournament featured 25 of the nation's top-50 individuals and Porras finished ahead of 22 the nationally ranked players who participated in the event.

The only ranked players who were ahead of Porras were top-ranked Megan McChrystal (LSU), No. 25 and individual champion Stephanie Meadow (Alabama) and fourth-ranked Lindy Duncan (Duke).

Porras registered 10 birdies and was guilty of just eight bogeys during her 54-hole round. Her 214 total is a career-low for 54 holes, while her fifth place finish is her highest finish of the 2010-11 campaign, and she now has 10 rounds of par or lower out of a possible 18 rounds.

The Green Wave turned in a 5-over 293 total during the final round and concluded the inaugural event with a three-round, 15-over 879 to tie fifth-ranked Duke for third place. The 2011 field featured 12 of the nation's top-25 teams and Tulane finished ahead of 10 of those squads, including five top-10 teams.

The Wave returns to action at the LSU Golf Classic, March 11-13, at the University Golf Club of Baton Rouge.
