New Orleans - Fresh off leading Tulane to a fourth place finish at the 2013 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship, freshman golfer Emily Penttila has been named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week, as it was announced today by the league office.
A native of Gothenburg, Sweden, Penttila is a first time selection as a C-USA Golfer of the Week and is the third Green Wave golfer to receive the prestigious honor this season. During the fall campaign, sophomore Gemma Dryburgh (Sept. 19) and senior Maribel Lopez Porras (Nov. 2) each collected the weekly honor.
This past weekend, Penttila fired a 1-under 143 (67-76) total and posted a fifth-place finish. She was the first round leader after firing a career-low and the tournament record-tying low with a 5-under 67 on Sunday. Her first round total proved to be the lowest round of the tournament.
Penttila's effort help Tulane finish ahead of eight teams ranked ahead of it in the latest Golfstat.com rankings, including top-10 squads No. 3 Florida and No. 4 Alabama. The Wave finished behind top-ranked USC, No. 2 Duke and No. 25 UCLA. Monday's round was cancelled due to damaging weather to the course on Sunday night.
Tulane returns to action when it makes the short trip to the University Club in Baton Rouge to participate in the 2013 LSU Tiger Golf Classic, March 22-24.
