NEW ORLEANS - Tulane senior Ashley McKenney has been named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week after leading the Green Wave to a third-place finish this past week at the UCF Challenge. This is the first weekly award for McKenney.
McKenney, who hails from Scottsdale, Ariz., combined for rounds of 72-73-69 for a 2-under 214 total and tied teammate Gemma Dryburgh for second place and both players finished just one stroke off the individual champion, Auburn's Victoria Trapani.
During Tuesday's final round, McKenney and Dryburgh each shot under par and helped lead a furious comeback as the Green Wave combined for a 2-over 290 total, the best team total of the day, and finished just three strokes shy of tournament winner and third-ranked Auburn.
TU, which entered the tournament ranked No. 53, was just one stroke behind second place and No. 22 ranked Baylor and finished ahead of No. 15 Texas, No. 27 South Carolina and No. 37 Kentucky.
McKenney, who entered the day in 13th place, carded the lowest round of the day individually with four birdies and produced her best round since an identical score during the second round of the 2010 Alamo Invitational. She sports a team-best 75.67 scoring average and has shot par or better three times this season.
Tulane returns to action when it hosts the second annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship, Feb. 26-28, at English Turn Golf & Country Club in New Orleans.
The 15-team field will include 13 teams ranked among the top 50 squads in the country and will also feature 17 of the top 50 individuals, including the nation's top-ranked player in Duke's Lindy Duncan.
