New Orleans - The Tulane women's golf team got off to a hot start during the opening round of the 2008 Derby Invitational as the Green Wave combined for a 19-over par 307 and is sitting in sixth place heading into Saturday's second round at the Auburn University Club at Yarbrough Farms in Auburn, Ala.

A total of four Green Wave players finished within seven strokes of par, including Tulane sophomore Janine Fellows, who shot the lowest round on the team with a three-over par 75, along with classmate Linn Gustafsson (+4), and the freshmen duo of Stephanie Wagstaff (+4) and Daniela Holmqvist (+7).

Fellows (T-21) and Gustafsson (T-26) each finished among the top 30 individuals in the field. Wagstaff is six strokes behind Gustafsson in a tie for the 32nd spot, while Holmqvist is tied for 46th. Freshman Samantha Troyanovich shot an 11-over par 83 and is tied for 62nd.

Tulane is the only team outside the nation's top 50 to finish among the top 12 teams today. The 17-team field features 13 squads ranked among the top-50 teams in the country.

Eighth-ranked Virginia came away with the top spot on the leader board, firing a combined one-over par 289, while No. 7 Alabama trails the Cavaliers by five strokes. Host and 11th-ranked Auburn was 10-over par today and is third, while third-ranked Arizona State (+12) and 43rd-ranked Ole Miss (+17) round out the top five teams, respectively. The Lady Rebels finished two strokes ahead of the Green Wave.

Individually, Virginia's 25th-ranked Whitney Neuhauser sits atop the leader board at the conclusion of the opening round with a three-under par 69, which is just one stroke better than Furman's Jackie Hilea, Arizona State's Anna Nordqvist and Alabama's Brooke Pancake.
