NEW ORLEANS - Tulane's 17th-ranked golf team overcame a five-hour rain delay and shot an even-par round with a 288 total and sits in sixth place, while sophomore Emily Penttila fired a 1-under 71 and sits in 22nd place to lead the Wave following the opening round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas.
Tulane's golfers arrived to The University of Texas Golf Club this morning for their 8 a.m. tee time, but rainy weather soaked the course and the groups were forced into a shotgun round beginning at 1 p.m. Nearly 12 hours later, the Green Wave entered the clubhouse just four back of the top five squads heading into Monday's second round.
Tulane will join golfers from SMU and Mississippi State for the second round and the groups will begin off the first tee box at 8:54 a.m.
"Today was a very long day with a five-hour rain delay, but I was very happy with the way the team handled the delay and the way we started," Tulane head coach Lorne Don said. "We were sharp early and it was great to see all five players contribute today. There were a lot of birdies out there today and we were under par for most of the round but we had a couple of tough finishes coming in. But, as a whole it was a good day."
The duo of sophomore Silvia Garces and freshman Belen Goicoechea each finished even today and are tied for 28th place, while sophomore Madison Opfer was 1-over and is tied for 39th place and junior Gemma Dryburgh was 3-over and sits in 51st place.
Miami (Fla.) shot an eye-popping 12-under par and leads second-ranked UCLA by five strokes, while No. 8 Arizona State is in third place at 5-under and the tandem of SMU and Mississippi State are each tied for fourth place at 4-under.
Individually, Dani Darquea of Miami (Fla.) and Mississippi State's Jessica Peng are each tied for the lead at 5-under and have a two-stroke lead over eight other players.
The Longhorn Network (LHN) will air a two-hour Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational broadcast on Tuesday, Nov. 5 (Part 1 [day one and two highlights] - 7 p.m. Central; Part 2 [final round highlights] - 8 p.m.). Click here to see if Longhorn Network is available in your area.
