Junior Janine Fellows is sitting in fourth place at even-par through 12 holes at the rain-shortened Mo Morial first round.
Sept. 11, 2009
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's golf team got off to a solid start in their 2009 fall debut at the "Mo" Morial, but inclement weather in the area forced the opening round to be halted with six of the 11 teams, including the Green Wave, still on the course and TU sitting in second place with a 3-over par total at the Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas.
The six teams will conclude their first round on Saturday at 7:30 a.m., while the teams that finished the opening round will begin the second round with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Along with Tulane's golfers, host Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Pan American and Troy each have players who also need to complete the first round.
"We played very well, but the weather proved to be too much," Tulane head coach John Thomas Horton said. "We had to play the hardest holes (16th and 17th) on the course in the rain and obviously struggled a little bit. We'll finish up the first round early in the morning and will look to get off to a good start in the second round and put ourselves in a good position heading into Sunday's final round."
Tulane is one stroke shy of first place Texas A&M and has four players among the top 10 players in the field, including sophomore Samantha Troyanovich who is through 15 holes with a 1-under par 71 and is tied for second place. Troyanovich has played near perfect golf with just one blemish, a double bogey at the sixth hole, but she finished with two birdies on the front nine and opened the back nine with a birdie on the 13th hole and has three holes remaining in her first round.
Junior Janine Fellows is even through 12 holes, but has the toughest hill to climb on Saturday as she will have to put in 24 holes. Fellows has two bogeys and two birdies during her opening round and is tied for fourth.
Sophomore Stephanie Wagstaff is off to a productive start with four birdies and four bogeys through 15 holes and has a 1-over par 73 total, which is good enough for seventh place.
Sophomore Ashley McKenney managed to play 15 holes before being forced off the course. McKenney was even through the first nine, but a double-bogey on the 10th hole and a bogey at the No. 15 hole has her with a 3-over par 75 and sitting in a 10th place tie.
Freshman Maribel Lopez Porras made her collegiate debut today and carded a 7-over par 79 total during her first round and is tied for 28th place. Porras was the lone Green Wave player to complete the first round.
