New Orleans - Tulane's Maribel Lopez Porras turned in her best effort of the 2011 NCAA Women's Golf Championships today with a 2-over 74 and completed her first national championship as an individual qualifier with a 65th place finish following the final round at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
It was a long final day for the tournament field as Friday's third round was delayed for nearly two hours due to lightning. Several teams were let on the course when darkness fell and play was once again halted. Those teams headed out to the course early today to complete their third round and then the field was able to begin the final round around mid morning.
Today, Porras opened the fourth round on the back nine and got into trouble early with three straight bogeys on hole Nos. 13-15 and was 3-over at the turn. She then began the front nine with her fourth bogey of the day to move to 4-over. However, the determined sophomore chalked up a pair of birdies and played the remaining holes to even par to conclude her second campaign as a Green Wave golfer. Porras posted a 17-over 305 total for the 72-hole event and concluded the championships on a strong note with a 6-over total during her final two rounds.
On Friday, Porras also started on the back nine and ran into three bogeys before posting a birdie on the 18th hole to drop to 2-over at the turn. She was tripped up on the third hole with a double bogey and ran into another bogey putt on the sixth hole before registering a birdie on the eighth hole and finishing with a 4-over 76 on the day. She managed to complete her round before the inclement weather settled into the area.
UCLA edged defending national champion Purdue by four strokes to take home the national team title, while LSU freshman Austin Ernst captured individual medalist honors with a 7-under 281, which was three strokes ahead of second place Kelli Shean of Arkansas, who was the national runner-up with a 4-under 284.
