Tulane Golfers Tied for Seventh Place Following Opening Round of NCAA East Regionals

New Orleans - Tulane's 31st-ranked women's golf team combined for a 12-over par 292 and sits in a tie for seventh place, while sophomore Janine Fellows led the Green Wave with an even-par performance and is tied for 10th place following the opening round of the 2009 NCAA East Regional at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.

The Green Wave will tee off at 11:50 a.m. (EST) on Friday and live scoring and results will be available on www.GolfStat.com. The top eight teams from each of the three regional site will punch their ticket for the national championships, May 19-22, in Owing Mills, Md.

Playing in its first NCAA Regional since 2005, and its sixth appearance overall, the Green Wave received a pair of solid outings from Fellows and fellow classmate Linn Gustafsson, who carded a 1-over-par 71 during the first round and is sitting at No. 11 heading into Friday's second round.

Fellows came up with six birdies to overcome a pair of double bogeys and one bogey. She registered five birdies on the back nine, while Gustafsson was saddled with three bogeys but posted two birdies for her first round score.

The freshman trio of Samantha Troyanovich, Daniela Holmqvist and Ashley McKenney each got off to a slow start today. Troyanovich produced the best round of the day by the rookie class with a 5-over par 75 and is currently tied for 40th place, while Holmqvist and McKenney each fired a 6-over par 76 total and are tied for 51st place.

The 37th ranked East Carolina Pirates blazed the field with a 3-over par 283 total and sits in first place with a one stroke lead ahead of sixth-ranked Alabama (284), while 23rd-ranked Vanderbilt (286) is third and the 20th ranked Denver Pioneers (287) hold down the fourth spot. No. 3 Virginia (+10) is fifth, while 10th-ranked North Carolina (291) is in sixth place. The 27th-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers (292) are tied with the Green Wave and both teams will enter Friday's second round just nine shots off the lead.

The East Carolina duo of Abby Bools and Ana Maria Puche is tied for first place after both players carded a 2-under par 68, while eight players are in a logjam for third place.
