NEW ORLEANS - Tulane golfers Gemma Dryburgh and Emily Penttila each fired a 4-under 68 and the 30th-ranked (Golfweek) Green Wave combined for a 7-under 281 total today to climb atop the leaderboard following the opening round of the 2014 Conference USA Women's Golf Championship at the Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club in Gulf Shores, Ala.

Tuesday's second round will begin with golfers from Tulane, UTSA and Middle Tennessee starting from the first tee box at 8:40 a.m.

Tulane is five strokes ahead of second-place UTSA, while Middle Tennessee (+6) is third, FIU (+7) is fourth and 46th-ranked East Carolina (+8) rounds out the top five squads.

Four of the Green Wave's five golfers are among the top 10 golfers in the field and the group combined for the fourth-lowest round in school history.

Dryburgh, a junior, and Penttila, a sophomore, each logged the lowest rounds by a TU player this year, while Dryburgh played error-free golf today with four birdies. Penttila accounted for six birdies against just two bogeys. The duo is tied with UTSA's Fabiola Arriaga for first place in the individual race.

Sophomore Madison Opfer overcame two bogeys with a pair of birdies to finish even on the day and is four strokes behind the leaders in sixth place.

Freshman Belen Goicoechea was even coming down the home stretch but a bogey on 17 put her at 1-over for the day and she is tied for 10th place.

Sophomore Silvia Garces went to the clubhouse with a 3-over 75 and is tied for 25th place.

"I am very happy with how focused all five golfers were from the start and with the way we finished," Tulane head coach Lorne Don said. "This is something we have been working on all year and we were ready to play today. Gemma and Emily each had two fantastic rounds and our other three golfers played really well. We will look to build on that tomorrow. It is one round and there are definitely some low scores out there. UTSA is right behind us and there are a bunch of teams that aren't out of it if they have a great day tomorrow."
