NEW ORLEANS - Tulane freshman Madison Opfer strung together the best round of her young career and tied the school record for the lowest round with a 5-under 67 and is in a three-way for first place, while the 20th-ranked Green Wave combined for 5-over 293 total for seventh place following the opening round of the M&F Bank Rebel Intercollegiate at the Ole Miss Golf Course in Oxford, Miss.
Tulane will join golfers from Harvard and Furman and the groups will begin teeing off from the first tee at 10 a.m. for Saturday's second round.
Opfer is the sixth Green Wave golfer to fire a 5-under score and joins classmate Emily Penttila among Tulane's elite. Penttila also tied the mark during the first round of the 2013 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship.
Today, Opfer registered five birdies and played an even-par round the rest of the way. She is tied with Baylor Hayley Davis and Chloe Garner of East Tennessee State atop the individual leaderboard.
"We had a tough day overall as a team, but Madison obviously had a great day at 5-under," Tulane head coach Andrew Pratt said. "I am very happy for her and she was due for a break-out round. We had a lot of three-putts today which is very uncharacteristic of our team. I really look for us to come out tomorrow and play much better."
Penttila carded a 2-over 74 and is in 26th place, while freshman Silvia Garces logged a 3-over 75 and sits in 33rd place.
Coastal Carolina's team had the hot hand today among the field of 18 squads with a 4-under 284 to assume the top spot on the leaderboard. Mississippi State and Baylor are each tied for second, while East Tennessee State is fourth and Kentucky and LSU are each tied for fifth place.
