NEW ORLEANS - The 33rd-ranked Tulane golf team overcame a wet course and windy conditions today with a combined 6-over 294 total and sits in a three-way tie for fifth place following the opening round of the Bancorp South Rebel Intercollegiate at the Ole Miss Golf Course in Oxford, Miss.
Sophomore Emily Penttila led the Wave during the first round with a 1-under 71 and sits in a tie for sixth-place, but is just one stroke off the lead. Freshman Belen Goicoechea suffered just one miscue on the day but made up for it with a birdie and finished her round at even par, which was good enough for 11th place and just two strokes off the lead.
Junior Gemma Dryburgh fired a 3-over 75 and is in 39th place, while the sophomore duo of Madison Opfer and Silvia Garces carded a 4-over 76 and a 5-over 77, respectively, and Opfer is tied for 46th place, while Garces is 56th.
Rookie Olivia Winning is playing as an individual and went to the clubhouse with a 7-over 79 and is 74th.
"Playing conditions were very challenging with the wind and a wet course, but I thought we handled it pretty well and the team played well for the most part," Tulane head coach Lorne Don said. "Emily is playing well and Belen was solid all day. Tomorrow we need everyone to play well together and we should be fine. We need to take advantage of some of the situations that we didn't today. We are really not far off. We set a goal to be under par tomorrow and I believe that is very attainable from this group."
GRU Augusta took its place atop the leaderboard in the team standings with a combined 2-under 286, while Coastal Carolina and East Tennessee State are each tied for second, Texas State is fourth and the Green Wave are tied for fifth place with Harvard and Kennesaw State.
Five players share the individual lead with a 2-under 70, including Casey Kennedy (GRU Augusta), Lejan Lewthwaite (Texas State), Hannah Pietila ( Tennessee), Brandi Rodriguez (Southern Miss), Dulcie Sverdloff (Kennesaw State), and the group holds a one shot lead over five players who are tied for six place.
Due to expected inclement weather on Sunday, the field will play 36 holes on Saturday with an 8:15 a.m., shotgun start. Live results from each round will be available at www.golfstat.com.
