NEW ORLEANS - Senior Maribel Lopez Porras shot a 1-under 71 and is in a three-way tie for first place and the 24th-ranked Tulane golfers combined for a 10-over 298 total today and sits in second place following the opening round of the 2013 LSU Golf Classic at the University Club in Baton Rouge.

Saturday's second round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. due to anticipated inclement weather in the area and TU will join golfers from No. 8 Arkansas and No. 43 Florida State. The groups will tee off from the first hole.

Today, the Green Wave received a solid round from Porras, who overcame four bogeys with five birdies including three on the front nine, and from freshman Madison Opfer, who fired a 2-over 74 and sits in a tie for 13th place.

Sophomore Gemma Dryburgh got off to a rocky start and was 6-over after 10 holes. She suffered one more bogey but heated up with three birdies on her final seven holes to finish 4-over and in 21st place.

Freshman Emily Penttila carded a 5-over 77 and is in 26th place, while rookie Silvia Garces went to the clubhouse with a 6-over 78 and is 34th.

"Overall, I thought we played a pretty solid round today, but it definitely wasn't our best game," Tulane head coach Andrew Pratt said. "Maribel played really well and I thought Madison really hung in there for us. Gemma's effort on the back nine was huge for us today. Silvia and Emily didn't have their best round today but I know they will play great tomorrow. This is a tough golf course and you have to be able to get up-and-down. We need to make better adjustments tomorrow and be prepared to grind out the next two rounds."

Arkansas holds a five-stroke lead over the second place Green Wave, while Florida State and TCU are tied for third place and No. 20 North Carolina State rounds out the top five squads.

Joining Porras at the top of the leaderboard are Arkansas' Gabriela Lopez and Tennessee's Erica Popson, the 2012 individual co-champion. The trio holds a one stroke lead over four players tied for fourth place.
