NEW ORLEANS - The 30th-ranked Tulane golf team fired an even-par 288 total and sits in fifth place, while freshman Emily Penttila carded a team-low 2-under 70 and is tied for eighth place following the opening round of the UCF Challenge at the Red Tail Golf Course in Sorrento, Fla.
TU will tee off from the first tee box on Monday morning at 8:15 a.m. CST and will join golfers from East Carolina and Augusta State for the round.
"For the first round of the spring, I thought our golfers did a good job of coming out and getting the job done today," Tulane head coach Andrew Pratt said. "I think our rust wore off pretty quickly and we had several golfers give us very good rounds. I think an even par round is a solid start and we're looking forward to the next two days."
Penttila got off to a strong start this morning with four birdies on her first 11 holes, dropping her to 4-under, but a pair of bogeys on holes 14 and 16 kept her at 2-under for the round.
Freshman Silvia Garces overcame three bogeys with four birdies, giving the Wave a pair of subpar golfers. Garces is tied for 13th heading into Monday's second round.
Freshman Madison Opfer birdied her last two holes and finished with a 1-over 73 and sits in 28th place, while senior Maribel Lopez Porras finished with a 2-over 74 and is in 35th place. Sophomore Gemma Dryburgh never got on track today, shooting a 9-over 81, and went to the clubhouse in 91st place.
South Carolina raced out to the team lead with a combined 4-under 284 total. The Gamecocks are three strokes ahead of a trio of teams in a log jam for second place, including North Carolina, UCF and Augusta State. Tulane rounds out the top five squads.
The Augusta State duo of Casey Kennedy and Natalie Wille share the individual lead, each firing a 5-under 67 total and are one stroke ahead of South Carolina's second place Justine Dreher.
