Senior wing Janique Kautsky and the Tulane University women's basketball team went to Flagstaff, Ariz., last week 3-0 on the year and came back 5-0 with a pair of victories to win the Hilton Garden Inn Thanksgiving Tournament. While Kautsky was named tournament MVP after averaging 8.5 points, 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds during the Green Wave's victories over Bradley and Western Michigan.
While Tulane enjoyed success on the court, the Green Wave also got to enjoy some time away from the hardwood as the team visited the Grand Canyon and helped Kautsky celebrate her birthday in the hotel after the championship-game victory over the Broncos. Below is Kautsky's recap of the trip.
G'Day Green Wave Fans,
Our trip to Flagstaff, Ariz., was nothing short of amazing. We began with a long day of traveling on Wednesday, followed by touring one of the seven wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon. Before arriving at the Canyon on Thursday afternoon, we made a short stop at Flintstones Bedrock City where we took our first of many team pictures. Further along the way we were given the history behind the national park before finally arriving there.
The Canyon was a breath-taking site for the whole team, many confirming that pictures could not do it justice. We spent the next 30 minutes admiring the view and taking hundreds of pictures to capture the moment. We then moved on to another site, showing a different and even more beautiful angle of the Canyon. After all of that, we were ready to head home and prepare for the Hilton Garden Inn Thanksgiving Tournament.
This Thanksgiving trip was by far my most memorable during my time at Tulane for numerous reasons. After an amazing effort by the team, we were crowned the tournament champions - which is something we had not done since I've been here - and I was named the MVP. I just took the honor for the team. It's just as much theirs as it is mine. It was also great to have teammate Olivia Grayson join me on the all-tournament team.
As if that wasn't enough, i was also celebrating my 22nd birthday on Saturday! To finish off an amazing weekend, my teammates along with their parents, and coaches threw me a surprise birthday party ending with a plate of cake and icing in my face - definitely one i will not forget. This amazing weekend couldn't have been possible without my teammates and coaches, creating everlasting memories.
