Karr High School power forward Diamanté Martinez became the third player and the second local product to sign with the Tulane women's basketball team during the NCAA Early Signing Period.

NEW ORLEANS - With her team set to square off against Southeastern Louisiana tonight, Tulane University head women's basketball coach Lisa Stockton added another prep standout for the 2014-15 campaign as New Orleans native Diamanté "DeDe" Martinez inked a National Letter of Intent with the Green Wave during the 2013 NCAA Early Signing Period.
A 6-3 power forward from Edna Karr High School, Martinez is the second local recruit slated to join the Tulane program next season as the Wave signed John Curtis Christian standout Kolby Morgan last Wednesday. Martinez' signing brings the incoming freshman class to three as Canadian import Caylah Cruickshank signed her NLI last week as well.
"Diamanté's strength, size and athleticism make her an outstanding prospect," Stockton said. "She is a dominant rebounder and defender, and has the potential to be an excellent college player. We are very excited to add DeDe to this strong recruiting class."
According to ESPN.com, Martinez is a two-star recruit, received an 82 Scout Grade and is rated as the No. 62 post in the nation. As a sophomore in 2011-12, she earned all-district honors after averaging 14.5 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. Martinez missed most of last year after suffering a broken fifth metatarsal in the 2012-13 season opener.
During her lone full prep season to date, Martinez helped lead the Jessica Barber-coached Cougars to a 14-12 overall record and a trip to the state playoffs. Along the way, she posted three triple-doubles, including an 18-point, 19-rebound, 20-block performance against Peabody Magnet in the final game of the year.
She started her junior campaign in fine fashion - scoring 12 points, pulling down six rebounds and blocking three shots - before suffering the season-ending injury. In addition to her prep accomplishments, Martinez also played summer ball for the Darius Mimms-coached Lady Pumas.
Martinez, Cruickshank and Morgan will join a Green Wave team next season expecting to return 12 of the 13 members of the 2013-14 team. While Green Wave fans will have to wait until next year for the three newcomers to make their Tulane debuts, the current women's basketball team returns to action tonight when it plays host to Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m. in Devlin Fieldhouse. From there, the Wave will head to North Carolina for a pair of weekend contests as Tulane will play at UNC-Wilmington on Friday and at North Carolina State on Sunday.
