NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's basketball team has added a third New Orleans-area signee during the early signing period, Green Wave head coach Lisa Stockton announced on Monday.

Shelly Cayette from Donaldsonville, La., joins New Orleans native Lakethia Hampton and LaPlace, La., standout Kinya Lennix as the Green Wave's third signee of the year.

"Shelly is an athletic post player who has a great work ethic," Stockton said. "We've had some terrific post players over the last several years and we think Shelly will carry that tradition into the future. We're certainly excited she has decided to continue her athletic and academic career at Tulane."

Like Hampton and Lennix, Cayette, a 6-4 center from Ascension Catholic High School, ranks as one of the top prep players in the nation. She has been listed as high as 26th on the All-Star Girls Report compilation of the Class of 2001 and is currently the seventh-best center in the rankings. She attended the 2000 adidas All-American camp this past summer. At Ascension Catholic, Cayette was a first-team all-state pick by the Louisiana High School Basketball Coaches Association as a junior. So far a three-time all-district choice, Cayette has recorded 1,039 career points, 745 career rebounds and has an impressive 219 blocked shots through three seasons. As a junior, Cayette scored 493 points, grabbed 325 rebounds and had 92 rejections.

"We're thrilled to have three of the top players in Louisiana joining us next season," Stockton added. "All three are exciting players to watch and should help us continue our success both in Conference USA and nationally."

Tulane returns to action on Friday, as the Green Wave play host to Nicholls State in Fogelman Arena. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. The game will also be part of a double-header with the Tulane and Nicholls State men's teams.
