NEW ORLEANS, La. - - After winning a second straight Conference USA Tournament title last season, the Tulane women's basketball team has been picked as the C-USA preseason favorite in a vote of the league coaches, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Also as part of the voting, senior Janell Burse was named to the preseason All-Conference USA team.

This marks the second straight season that the Green Wave has been tabbed as the preseason favorite in Conference USA. Last year, Tulane and Marquette shared preseason honors, with the Wave going on to win its second straight C-USA Tournament title and third in four seasons.

Burse averaged 16.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per contest last season, while also leading the league in blocked shots for the second straight year. A senior center, Burse was the only player in the nation to rank among the nation's leaders in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocked shots. Burse, a native of New Orleans, is joined on the preseason all-league team by UAB's Deanna Jackson, DePaul's Lenae Williams, Memphis' Tiffany Adkins and Charlotte's Tonya Phifer. Jackson was selected as the preseason Player of the Year by the league's 12 coaches.

Tulane returns three starters and eight letterwinners from last season's squad that turned in a 27-5 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Green Wave kick off the 2000 season with an exhibition on Thursday against the Mississippi All-Stars at Fogelman Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
