Grace Daley was chosen as
the C-USA Preseason
Player of the Year
Oct. 28, 1999
NEW ORLEANS, La. - - After claiming the Conference USA regular-season and tournament titles last year, the Tulane women's basketball team has been picked as the C-USA preseason co-favorite by the league's coaches, the conference office announced Thursday.
Also as part of the voting, the Green Wave's Grace Daley was named the preseason Player of the Year. The Green Wave were selected as preseason co-favorites along with Marquette and were chosen as the preseason leader in the league's National Division ahead of rival UAB.
Tulane returns three starters from last season's 24-6 team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season. The Wave captured a share of the Conference USA regular-season championship and won the C-USA tournament crown for the second time in three seasons. The returning Green Wave players accounted 81.2 percent of its scoring and 77.1 percent of its rebounding last year. Tulane also led the nation in blocked shots, setting a new Conference USA record in the process.
Should Daley hold form and be named C-USA's Player of the Year at the end of the season, it wold give the Ocala, Fla., native a clean sweep of every league honor. This season's preseason Player of the Year, Daley has already earned Defensive Player of the Year (1998), Sixth Player of the Year (1997) and Freshman of the Year (1997) honors. She was named as the C-USA Tournament's Most Valuable Player this past season after leading the Green Wave to its second title in three seasons and has twice been a first-team All-Conference USA selection. In addition, Daley was a member of the Conference USA All-Freshman team in 1997.
Daley is joined on the preseason All-Conference USA team by Louisville's Jill Morton, Cincinnati's Madinah Slaise, Marquette's Abbie Willenborg and UAB's Deanna Jackson, last season's Freshman of the Year.
The Green Wave begins defense of its C-USA titles on Nov. 5 with an exhibition contest against the Houston Jaguars. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Fogelman Arena. Tulane's regular-season opener is a Nov. 19 road trip to Siena in Loudonville, N.Y.
