NEW ORLEANS - Sixteen home games and 11 potential contests against teams that made the postseason a year ago highlight the 2012-13 Tulane University women's basketball schedule, head coach Lisa Stockton announced on Sunday.
Among the teams to play the Tulane squad at home for the upcoming season are three state opponents, including the season-opener vs. Louisiana Tech on Nov. 9. The Green Wave will once again host the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic in late December and will also head to Flagstaff, Ariz., during the Thanksgiving holiday for a two-day tournament at Northern Arizona.
The Green Wave slate will once again be a challenging one as the schedule features four NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago: Eastern Michigan, LSU, McNeese State and UTEP; a pair of WNIT participants: UNC-Wilmington and Memphis; and a pair of Women's Basketball Invitational squads: Bradley and Rice. Tulane will also play host to Loyola-New Orleans, who in addition to being coached by former Green Wave assistant Kellie Kennedy also qualified for the 2012 NAIA Women's Division I National Tournament.
"We are very excited about the team we return for the 2012-13 season and we want to build on last year's success with this very competitive schedule," Stockton said. "It's a great opportunity for us to open at home against a strong Louisiana Tech squad, which will be a future member of Conference USA, and conference play should be very intense in the last year of with the current C-USA membership."
Following the season-opener against the Lady Techsters, Tulane's 29-game regular season continues with a pair of road games at Louisiana-Monroe (Nov. 12) and Southern (Nov. 16) before heading to Northern Arizona to take on Bradley in the opening round (Nov. 23) and either host NAU or Western Michigan in day two of the NAU Thanksgiving Tournament (Nov. 24).
After the trip to The Grand Canyon State, Tulane returns to its home court for games against Auburn (Nov. 28) and UNC-Wilmington (Dec. 2) and will play at LSU on Dec. 9. From there, the Wave will play their next six games at home, facing Louisiana-Lafayette on Dec. 19 and North Texas on Dec. 22 before hosting Eastern Michigan, McNeese State and Ole Miss in the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic on Dec. 29-30, battling Loyola-New Orleans on Jan. 7 and opening the Conference USA portion of the schedule against SMU on Jan. 10.
Tulane will also play host to league foes Memphis on Jan. 20, East Carolina on Jan. 27, UTEP on Feb. 7, Rice on Feb. 14, Houston on Feb. 17, Tulsa on Feb. 24 and Southern Miss on March 3. In addition, the Green Wave will play C-USA road games at Marshall on Jan. 13, Rice on Jan. 17, UCF on Jan. 31, Houston on Feb. 2, Tulsa on Feb. 10, UAB on Feb. 21 and SMU on Feb. 28 before closing out the regular season at UTEP on March 8.
The 2013 C-USA Women's Basketball Championship is slated for March 13-16 at the Tulsa Convention Center and The BOK Center with the University of Tulsa serving as the host institution. The winner of the C-USA Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which will begin play on March 23. The NCAA Sweet 16 and regional titles games will be played from March 30-April 2, and the NCAA Women's Final Four will be held at the New Orleans Arena., with games scheduled for April 7 and 9.
The Green Wave return 10 letterwinners and four starters from last season, which saw Tulane go 23-11, finish fourth in the C-USA regular-season standings, advance to the C-USA Championship title game and earn a bid to the WNIT. Headlining the list of returning veterans are 2012 first-team All C-USA honoree Olivia Grayson as well as the reigning C-USA Freshman of the Year Danielle Blagg. Other returning players include seniors Janique Kautsky, Brittany McDonald and Tyria Snow, junior Ashley Westby, and sophomores Tiffany Dale, Adesuwa Ebomwonyi, Jamie Kaplan and Katye Magee.
The 2012-13 team welcomes back the services of sophomore wing Whitney Bibbins - who redshirted last year due to injury - and the Green Wave added incoming freshmen Chinwe Duru, Tierra Jones and Morgan Rogers.
