NEW ORLEANS - Sixteen home games in Devlin Fieldhouse and 13 potential contests against teams that made the postseason a year ago highlight the 2013-14 Tulane University women's basketball schedule, head coach Lisa Stockton announced on Monday.
The upcoming season marks the end of an era for Tulane Athletics as the Green Wave will play its final year as a member of Conference USA before heading to the American Athletic Conference for the 2014-15 academic year. Tulane was a charter member of C-USA and have won more regular-season crowns (four) and tournament titles (five) than any other current member team since the conference was formed for the 1995-96 season.
"This year is bittersweet," Stockton added. "We are excited about our future in the AAC but tough leaving Conference USA, especially since Tulane was one of the original members. The new Conference USA will be exciting with some strong programs entering the league as well as the matchups against some familiar conference rivals. With 16 games in Devlin Fieldhouse, this schedule will be exciting for our fans."
In addition to league staples East Carolina, Marshall, Rice, Southern Miss, Tulsa, UAB and UTEP, the Green Wave will welcome Charlotte - which was a member of C-USA from 1995-2005 - Florida Atlantic (FAU), Florida International (FIU), Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion and Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) to the league this season.
Of those teams, seven made the postseason a year ago. Middle Tennessee, which won the Sun Belt Conference in 2012-13, and Tulsa made the NCAA Tournament while Charlotte, East Carolina, FIU, Old Dominion and UAB joined the Green Wave among the 64 teams selected to participate in the WNIT.
In addition, the 2013-14 schedule also features a Jan. 5 home game against NCAA Tournament participant LSU, and contests against WNIT squads North Carolina State (Nov. 24 in Raleigh, N.C.) and Auburn (Dec. 3 in Auburn, Ala.) as well as a potential match-up against Indiana State (Dec. 29) in day two of the 2013 Tulane/DoubleTree Classic in Devlin Fieldhouse. In addition, the Green Wave will host Women's Basketball Invitation teams McNeese State (Nov. 11 at home) and Saint Francis (Dec. 21 in Fort Myers, Fla.).
The game against Saint Francis is the Green Wave's second game in the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament, where Tulane will also face Virginia on Dec. 20. The Wave will host a tournament of its own as Devlin Fieldhouse will be the sight of the 18th Annual Tulane/DoubleTree Classic. Tulane will open the event with a showdown against Northeastern on Dec. 28 and will face either Indiana State or Northwestern the following day.
The Green Wave open the 2013-14 season with three-straight home games as Tulane will play host to in-state rivals New Orleans on Nov. 8, McNeese State on Nov. 11 and Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 19. Tulane's other non-conference home games are against Ole Miss on Nov. 30, Loyola-New Orleans on Dec. 8 and LSU on Jan. 5. The Wave will also play a non-conference outing on the road at UNC-Wilmington on Nov. 22.
Tulane opens the C-USA portion of the schedule on Jan. 8 at Marshall and will also play road league games at Old Dominion on Jan. 11, at Charlotte on Jan. 22, at Rice on Jan. 29, at UTSA on Feb. 8, at FAU on Feb. 12, at UAB on Feb. 22 and at Southern Miss on March 1.
The Green Wave play their first conference home game on Jan. 15 against East Carolina while hosting Southern Miss on Jan. 18, Louisiana Tech on Jan. 25, UTEP on Feb. 1, North Texas on Feb. 5 and FIU on Feb. 15 before closing out the regular season on March 5 vs. Middle Tennessee.
The 2013 Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship is slated for March 11-15 in El Paso, Texas, and the winner of the tournament will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
