Tulane, On Cusp of C-USA Title, Still Receiving Votes in Both Women's Basketball Polls
Feb. 20, 2007 NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane Women's Basketball team (22-5 overall) continues to garner votes in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll. The Green Wave are in the also receiving votes category for the fourth straight week in the AP, and register points in the Coaches' poll for the second-consecutive week. The Green Wave can clinch a share of the regular-season Conference USA crown with a win Thursday over SMU. Tulane (11-3) owns a one-game lead over UAB (10-4, 15-11 overall) for the top spot in the conference. Tulane is receiving 8 points in the AP, which ranks 32nd among vote-getters. Last week, the Wave was slotted 29th with 13 points beofre splitting last weekend at Marshall and East Carolina. The Green Wave earned one point in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Top 25, good for a tie for 37th. Tulane, a regular in the Top 25 from 1997 to 2001, was last ranked in the Top 25 the week of Jan 7, 2002 (No. 20 AP). Tulane's highest ranking ever was No. 7 in the February 29 and March 7, 2000 AP Poll. The Green Wave occupy first place in Conference USA with a 11-3 record. Tulane can clinch a first round bye in the Conference USA tournament with a win this weekend or with a loss by either Rice, East Carolina, or UTEP. A C-USA regular season championship would be the third for the Green Wave, having won the league in 1997 and 1999. The Wave have won four C-USA tournament titles, in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001. Last Thursday's win at Marshall gave Tulane a 10-game win streak, the second longest win streak. But the East Carolina Pirates knocked off the Wave Saturday with a 76-68 win in Greenville. Tulane has wrapped up its eighth 20-win season in the last 13 years, all under coach Lisa Stockton. The previous seven resulted in NCAA Tournament appearances as Tulane has earned a trip to the dance in each season the team has won at least 19 games (1995-2003). A school record for wins (currently at 27 in 1999-2000) is still a possibility as Tulane has four regular season games remaining before the Conference USA Tournament. On Thursday, the Wave meet SMU in a 7 p.m. tip-off at Fogelman Arena. Tulane will have Senior Day activities on Saturday, with a doubleheader on CSTV with the men's team. At 3 p.m, the Tulane men take on Southern Miss in a national live broadcast on CSTV. The women's game with Tulsa will follow 35 minutes following the conclusion of the game. The Tulsa-Tulane meeting will air tape delay on CSTV on Sunday at noon.
