NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Tulane women's basketball player Janell Burse has been named the Conference USA Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Burse earned the honor after leading Tulane to C-USA wins over Southern Miss, Saint Louis and Charlotte last week. She averaged 20.6 points and 13.0 rebounds while connecting on 62.2 percent of her shots. The two-time defending Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year, Burse also excelled on the defensive end of the floor, blocking seven shots and grabbing seven steals in the three contests.
"Janell played a big role in all three wins last week," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "Her scoring and rebounding were important, but she really played very good defense in those games. I'm very happy for her."
Burse recorded a double-double in each game, making her the only C-USA player to record a double-double in their first three league contests this season. She started the week with 18 points and 15 rebounds in the road win against Southern Mississippi. She also added three blocks and two steals against the Golden Eagles. In Tulane's road win over Saint Louis, she had 21 points and 11 rebounds, while adding two blocks and a steal. She closed out the week with 23 points and 13 rebounds against Charlotte in the Wave's C-USA home opener. She also had four steals and two blocks against the 49ers.
Monday's honor marked the fourth time in her career that Burse has been named Conference USA Player of the Week. She received the recognition twice last season and once as a sophomore. The Player of the Week award is also just another entry on Burse's impressive resume. A preseason All-America selection this year, Burse was a first-team Conference USA selection last year while also earning All-America honors from the Associated Press and the Women's Basketball Journal. She was named the C-USA Tournament Most Valuable Player last season after leading the Wave to its second straight tournament title. In addition to her two league Defensive Player of the Year honors, Burse was Conference USA's Sixth Player of the Year as a sophomore.
Burse and the Green Wave return to action on Friday, Jan. 12, when Tulane plays host to C-USA foe South Florida at Fogelman Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
