NEW ORLEANS - The Green Wave women's basketball team emerged with a 77-72 victory over the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks Saturday afternoon at Fogelman Arena. Brittany Lindsey scored 14 second-half points, while Alendra Brown made a series of key plays late in the second half for the victory.

Tulane (9-3) was led by Lindsey's 16 points and 10 rebounds, her second career double-double performance. Brown added 13 points, five rebounds and a four steals, two in the final three minutes as Tulane made a series of defensive stands to turn a two-point deficit into a five-point lead.

Sophomore guard Chassity Brown added 13 points, five assists and four steals, while point guard Ashley Langford chipped in nine points and seven assists. She connected of four-of-four free throws in the final minutes as Tulane held on to the win.

ULM (8-4) was led by Regena Jackson's 13 points, while Shannon Lloyd and Jesse Carrier each posted 10 points in a physical game which featured 47 fouls and 57 free throws.

Tulane forced 25 turnovers, and owned a 38-18 advantage in points in the paint.

"We came back in the second half more focused, and more intense," head coach Lisa Stockton said. "We handled their pressure a lot better and made some key defensive adjustments in the second half."

The Wave opened to a 7-0 lead as Chassity Brown drained a three from the top of the key. Kendra Barnes converted an `and-one' opportunity as Tulane stretched the margin to 18-8. But the Warhawks answered with full-court pressure and back-to-back three-pointers. ULM held Tulane without a field goal for over four minutes, pulling to within 21-18 with 8:08 to go in the first.

 

 

Brown ripped off a steal at mid-court and laid it in for two as Tulane restored a 29-20 lead. Ashley Wallis scored in transition for ULM, as the Warhawks used a 16-4 run to take a 38-35 lead before Kiara Slaton beat the halftime buzzer with a jumper from the elbow. ULM led 38-37 at the break, as they connected on five-of-eight from three-point range. Each team committed 14 first-half miscues,

In the second half, Langford found Brown cutting to the basket as the Wave took a 44-42 lead. The Warhawks took their then-largest lead at 59-55, but Alendra Brown hit a base-line jumper, and scored off an offensive rebound as the Wave clawed to within one. Chassity Brown forced an offensive foul on LaJeanna Howard, her fifth. Lindsey hit a pair of free throws, as Tulane trailed, 61-60 with 6:32 left.

After Lottie Moore nailed a three for the `Hawks, Alendra Brown picked up a steal, an assist and a trip to the free throw line, to keep it a one-point game. Lindsey and Shannon Lloyd traded baskets in the paint, and Langford drove the baseline, scoring while being fouled as Tulane took a 68-67 lead. ULM's Kassie Courtney and Tulane's Alendra Brown each scored in the paint.

Brown then picked up a steal, and converted a lay-up at the other end as the Wave held a 72-69 edge with 1:14 remaining. Lindsey grabbed the rebound of a missed three-point attempt, and hit one-of-two free throws, and then Langford hit four-of- four free throws in the final 30 seconds to ice the game.

Senior guard Nikki Luckhurst connected on two three-pointers, tying and passing former 2007 teammate Jami Montagnino (who was in the stands, along with fellow 2007 grad D'Aundra Henry), for fourth on the Green Wave's career three's made list.

Tulane will play on Wednesday at New Orleans Arena, in a doubleheader with the Tulane men's team. The Green Wave women take on Nicholls State at 5 p.m., with the men's team squaring off with LSU at 8 p.m. on CSTV.
