Head Coach Lisa Stockton
"Starting the game, we didn't shoot the ball very well. We had a lot of opportunities that we just didn't convert on. I felt really good about accomplishing our goals for tonight, though. One of the things we really did well was keeping our intensity high, especially with a short bench. I was pleased with our rebounding. We have some great rebounders with Adesuwa and Tiffany Dale, and even if you aren't shooting the ball that well, as long as you get some good rebounding you have a good shot to win the game."
On the Green Wave's defensive effort
"I really liked our defense tonight. For some of the freshmen, this is a brand new system. When you look at some of the players that had significant minutes last season, there aren't a lot of them left. Tierra Jones, I thought, played some really good minutes for us tonight along with several other players. I think the defense is what I'd really like to work on, obviously, along with the number of foul calls and being aggressive. But it's really hard to stay away from the team fouls when you're being aggressive like we are right now. We just need to find that balance between being aggressive and being overaggressive, and that's the main thing."
On the performance of Tulane's freshmen
"I think they did a good job today. I think they are very excited to play here. One of the things that really stands out about them is that they are very confident, but not cocky. They play really hard. We saw some great things from Leslie [Vorpahl] tonight. We're very fortunate to have some aggressive freshmen tonight, especially with the minutes they are going to have to play this season. The more minutes we can get for them now, the better they are going to be come January and conference play."
On the performance of junior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi
"Adesuwa kind of blew that off like it was no big deal, but I've really seen a real change in how she's been playing from last year to this year. The way she's been playing in practice is so much aggressively. Last year, she was afraid to shoot those 3-pointers - sometimes she did and sometimes she didn't. I think she's become a more consistent player, and that really showed out there tonight. She's worked her way to this position. I'm really glad that she came out tonight and played the way she did. She's a very good 3-point shooter, but she was just never confident enough to shoot those in the past. We moved her from the four to the three and it's good to see come through in her new role."
On Jamie Kaplan's career-high 13 assists
"Jamie just has such a floor presence. She's another player that just plays all out all the time. I joke with her sometimes that she plays too fast for everybody else, but she just did a great job of finding people and finding people open. She did a great job of putting people in position to score by getting them the ball in the right spot at the right time. She's got a great attitude and I think she's really excited about this season, this group and the leadership she provides to this group."
On playing against UNO's zone defense
"I think zone is a lot about timing, so I think we will get better at beating it. We don't have too much in for the zone right now, but we were pretty efficient in just finding ways to open it up and score inside. I think one way to break a zone is to beat it in more than one way."
Junior Point Guard Jamie Kaplan
On the Green Wave getting off to a slow start
"It was the first game of the season so it's not uncommon that you start off a little slow. Once we kind of got going and got into a rhythm, we relaxed a little bit. We took control of the ball. I was happy with the amount of turnovers we didn't have. I think as the game progressed, we got better and better."
On her assist total against UNO
"It was good. It's fun having players like (Adesuwa Ebomwonyi) make my life easy. It feels good. I enjoyed it. I was glad I could do what I needed to in order to help the team win."
On what she feels the team needs to improve on
"In the locker room, we talked about our defense. I think we want to become a team with our identity being a tough defensive team so I think that's something we'll definitely start working on tomorrow to fix that. It wasn't like we were bad. We just want to get better at that and I think that's our No. 1 goal right now."
On the team scoring off UNO's turnovers
"It was great. I think we were aggressive. As the game went on, we got more aggressive on the ball. Even with rebounding and stuff like that, we pushed the ball. We have some great players who can run the floor and that makes getting baskets easier."
On the Green Wave freshmen
"It was awesome. We might lack a little bit of depth this year compared to what we had last year, but our freshmen have come in and really stepped up. I'm proud of them so far and I hope we can just keep going."
Junior Forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi
Overall thoughts on the game
"It felt great to play out there on the court. My teammates had my back. We lost a lot of seniors (from last year) and I felt I had to step up. My role has changed and I feel like I have to go on the court and do what I have to do to help our team."
On posting career highs in points and rebounds
"It felt really good. The coaches were like, `You need three more points and one more rebound,' and I was like, `I'm going to go do that.' I just kept getting more."
On opening the season with a win
"Right now, these first couple of games, it's important that we get the win because we're playing teams that are good but we should step up and play to our ability. We need to work on our offense and execute. We have to do a lot of little things now to help us later on in the season."
