Tulane Women's Basketball Cruises Past Jackson State in WNIT, 76-43

NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's basketball team used a 28-7 run to open the game, and shot 56.5 percent to coast to a 76-43 victory over the Jackson State Tigers in the Women's National Invitation Tournament Wednesday night at Fogelman Arena. The Wave were led by a career-high 19 points from Alendra Brown and will face Mississippi State on Sunday in Starkville, MS at 2 p.m. in the second round. Tulane, the regular season Conference USA champions (25-6 entering) shot 55 percent (19-of-34) in the first half, holding Jackson State to just 17 percent (5-of-30). Sasha Staidum connected on all five of her field goal attempts for 10 points in 16 minutes, while Jami Montaganino added nine points and Jennifer Sands and D'Aundra Henry each chipped in eight, with Henry leading the team with seven assists. Ashley Langford handed out five assists and scored six points herself. Her seven assists stretch her single-season assist record at Tulane over 200 with 200 on the season, and she moves into seventh on the all-time list at Tulane with 371 as just a sophomore. The Green Wave owned the paint, out-scoring the Tigers 56-16 inside and holding a 52-38 edge in rebounds. Jackson State (22-11, the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season champions) was led by 14 points from Shante Stanford, and 13 points and nine rebounds from Carena Easley. Tulane opened to a 14-4 lead in the first five minutes thanks to back-to-back baskets inside from Brown. The Wave stretched the margin to 22-7 with 10:05 remaining thanks to four steals. The Green Wave connected on 11 of its first 16 shots (68.8%) and holding Jackson State to two of its first 18 field goal attempts (11.1%) percent. Brown equaled the Tigers' scoring, with 12 herself as the Wave led 35-12 with 3:12 remaining in the first.
In the second half, Tulane continued to shoot lights out, connecting on 57 percent of their shots. (16-of-28) and forced 11 second half turnovers. Combined, the Wave forced 19 turnovers and led by as many 35. Dominique Philpots led Tulane win eight rebounds, while Montagnino and Kendra Barnes each grabbed six boards. The Green Wave are now 2-2 all-time in WNIT action, after posting a 1-2 record in their first WNIT appearance in 1994. |
