COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Green Wave got off to a rocky start, dropping all five singles matches in day one of the Wells Fargo/Hurricane Katrina Fundraiser Tournament Friday at Pebble Creek Country Club.
The tournament is a fundraiser to help the Tulane Athletic Department raise money following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in August. The Green Wave men's tennis team was relocated along with five other teams to Texas A&M for the fall semester, but will return to Tulane's uptown New Orleans campus in January.
"We just got started with our conditioning program this week, but we will continue to improve as we play more," Tulane head coach Robert Klein said.
Magdy El Mihdawy won his first set, 6-4, over Texas A&M's John Nalon, but Nalon came back to win the next two sets 6-2 and 6-3. Ted Angelinos also played a three-set match, sandwiching a 6-3 win between 6-3 and 7-5 losses to LSU's Jose Moncada.
The tournament continues on Saturday and Tulane will host a silent auction and clinic at the Pebble Creek Country Club from 4-6 p.m. The clinic is available for juniors and adults, it will be conducted by participating coaches and student-athletes, and the fee is $25. For more information, contact Tulane men's tennis coach Robert Klein at 832-474-0266.
