KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tulane University freshman Michael Kogan is making a bid to win the Flight A singles at the Tennessee Fall Classic. The freshman has won advanced to the finals with wins in his first four matches.
Kogan notched a 7-6, 6-1 win in the first round, while teammate Mikko Viljanen also advanced with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
While Viljanen was upended in the second round, Kogan continued his success, winning 6-3, 6-2 in round two, followed by a 6-4, 6-3 third round victory. Kogan advanced to the finals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mississippi State's Mathieu Soto. He will battle Furman's Patrick Gaughan in the championship.
The tournament also features a nationally-ranked player flight. Despite not being nationally-ranked, Kogan and Viljanen earned a wild card. In its first match in doubles play, the Green Wave duo upended the No. 36 ranked doubles tandem from Mississippi, Kristofer Stalberg and Conor Casey.
The Tennessee Classic is an event which features players from 18 colleges. It has been divided into three flights for singles and doubles: Flight A, Flight B, and a Nationally-Ranked Flight. Both Green Wave players will finish action on Sunday.
