BALTIMORE -- Tulane senior Anna Monhartova, ranked 67th in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, won three matches Wednesday to advance into the main draw of the T.Rowe Price National Intercollegiate Clay Court Championships being played at the Suburban Club of Baltimore County. She joined the Tulane men's doubles team of Mikko Viljanen and freshman Michael Kogan in the main draw of the event, which begins Thursday.

Monhartova defeated Gizella Turbok of Charleston Southern, 8-6, to advance to the 32-woman main draw in singles. Earlier in the day, Monhartova defeated Aimee Smith of Wake Forest, 8-1, in second round action. She received a break when her first round opponent, American's Lauren Martin, defaulted.

The Green Wave men's doubles team of senior Viljanen and freshman Kogan advanced through two rounds of doubles qualifying and will play in the 32-team doubles draw Thursday as well. The pair defeated Zoltan Csandi and Nichlas Hallberg of Old Dominion, 8-2, in their first match before dowining Oscar Johansson and Oggie Kolev of Arkansas, 8-3.

In singles action, Kogan, a freshman from Israel, began his Tulane career by winning three pre-qualifying matches before falling to Carter Morris of Stanford in two tough sets, 7-6, 7-6, in the first round of qualifying Wednesday. Kogan picked up victories over Landon Shafer of George Mason (7-5, 6-0), David Jansson of Southern Miss (6-3, 6-2) and Bence Hamori of American (6-2, 7-5).

Viljanen defeated Henoch Terefe of Coppin State (6-0, 6-2) and Nadim Nasser of South Florida (6-2, 2-6, 7-5) in the prequalifying tournament before falling to Mariano Pettigrosso of Arkansas Little-Rock, 6-0, 6-3. Despite the loss, Viljanen advanced to the qualifying draw as a "lucky loser". He lost to Seth Rose of South Carolina, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, in the first round of qualifying Wednesday.

Tulane's Mattias Westerberg lost 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 to Gustavo Kawassaki of Winthrop in the first round of pre-qualifying last Saturday.

In addition to Kogan and Viljanen's main draw matches beginning Thursday, Green Wave men's players Derya Rose and Goran Vasiljevic will be in action this weekend at the Brentwood Intercollegiate in Beaumont, Texas.
