NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Memphis and DePaul University won their first-round matches in opening day action of the Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship Friday afternoon at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Memphis, the No. 7 seed, topped No. 10 Saint Louis, 4-0, in the first match of the day. The Tigers will meet host and No. 2 seed Tulane at 12 noon on Friday at Goldring.
No. 9 seed DePaul also had a 4-0 victory, defeating No. 8 Marquette. The Blue Demons move on to play No. 1 seed South Florida at 3 p.m. Friday at Goldring.
Saint Louis and Marquette will also be in action at Goldring Friday, battling for ninth place at 9 a.m.
Memphis earned the point in doubles action by taking the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. In singles action, sophomore Joe Schmulian (Devon, South Africa) won 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2, senior Alistair Todd (Perth, West Australia) had a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4, and junior Michael Lahaie (West Lafayette, Ind.) rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at No. 6.
DePaul and Marquette had a hard-fought battle in doubles with the teams splitting at No. 1 and No. 3, but the Blue Demons earned the point with a win at No. 2.
In singles action, DePaul had wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6. Junior Robert Kurak (Park Ridge, Ill.) had a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3, while junior Dan Bennett (Columbus, Ohio) cruised 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and sophomore Andy Michael (Elkview, W.Va.) won, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
The other Friday matches will be played at Aurora Country Club. No. 3 Charlotte plays No. 6 UAB at 12 noon and No. 4 Louisville meets No. 5 Southern Miss at 3 p.m.
