April 6, 2001

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Sophomore Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico) is ranked No. 84 in the nation according to the most recent (April 6) Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Computer Rankings. Romero joins freshman teammate Michael Kogan (Kfar Saba, Israel), who is ranked No. 29 in the country.

Romero, who was named the Conference USA Co-Athlete of the Week last week, has been a key performer for the Green Wave. The sophomore has posted a 13-3 record in singles action this spring. In addition, he has won nine of his last 10 matches, with his lone loss coming to Arkansas' Oskar Johansson, the No. 1 ranked player in the nation. Teaming with classmate Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Colombia), Romero has recorded a 10-4 record in doubles action.

Kogan, meanwhile, has battled a wrist injury for the last two weeks. Despite his injury, the freshman jumped from No. 34 to No. 29 this week, the highest ranking of his career. He has an 11-2 singles record this spring and a 24-4 mark for his career. Kogan and senior Mikko Viljanen (Vantaa, Finland) have been nearly flawless as a doubles tandem. The pair have a 12-1 record in pairs play and are ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Tulane, ranked No. 43 in the nation, has won its last three matches in a row to improve to 10-8 on the season. The Wave hosts No. 66 Virginia Tech on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Goldring Tennis Complex. Following that match, Tulane closes the regular season on the road at Southern Miss (Friday, April 13). The Conference USA Tournament will be hosted by Tulane at Goldring Tennis Complex and Aurora Country Club from April 19-22.
