April 4, 2001

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University sophomore Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico) was named the Co-Athlete of the Week for men's tennis by Conference USA this week.

Romero had a strong week for the Green Wave tennis team, which went 2-1, including a defeat of No. 47 Tulsa. Romero, who is unranked, lost his first match of the week, but it was a hard-fought, 6-2, 6-4 decision to Arkansas' Oskar Johansson, the No. 1 ranked player in the nation. The sophomore came back to post straight set wins in matches against Tulsa and Wichita State. He also teamed with Jorge Lievano to go 2-0 in doubles play for the week (doubles were not played against Arkansas due to weather). Romero is now 12-3 in singles and 10-4 in doubles in his debut season for the Green Wave, which is ranked No. 43 in the nation.

The nationally-ranked Green Wave men's tennis team hosts Louisiana-Lafayette Thursday at 5 p.m. at Goldring Tennis Complex. The Wave is also in action on Saturday, hosting Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. It will be Senior Day for Tulane as the seniors from the men's and women's tennis teams will be recognized.
