Oct. 30, 2009
NEW ORLEANS - Freshman Adam Bernstein picked up a pair of victories to advance to the semifinals of his flight as the Tulane men's tennis team opened play at the Alabama Crimson Tide Invitational Friday in Tuscaloosa. Sophomore Shaye Wali and freshmen Rodrigo Rappaccioli, Chris Somers and Coby Kramer-Golinkoff each picked up one win on the tournament's first day. Bernstein opened the round of 16 with a victory over Memphis' John Taylor by scores of 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. There, he turned in a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ryan Poole of Chattanooga to move on to the semifinals of the Stabler flight. Bernstein now owns a team best 6-3 record in singles and will meet Alabama's Trey Walston at 9 a.m. Saturday in the semis. "Adam did a good job today getting through two tough matches," head coach Mark Booras said. "He kept his focus through tough conditions with the heavy winds. I was really pleased with the way he handled the adversity and advanced. All in all, the guys competed well in singles today. We had several good wins, and our losses were close. I'm really pleased with the way things are progressing for this young team." In the Stallings Flight, Kramer-Golinkoff earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Jeremy Tardif of Gardner Webb to advance to the quarterfinals. However, UAB's Tommy Petrich knocked off Kramer-Golinkoff 7-6, 6-2 to move on to the semis. Shaye Wali opened the Bryant Flight with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Alabama's Ricky Doverspike, but fell to Charlie Jones of Vanderbilt, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Rappaccioli swept Julien Roussel of Southern Miss, 7-5, 6-2 in the round of 16 in the Namath flight. In the quarterfinals, Rappaccioli fell to Alabama's Michael Davis 7-5, 6-2. Also in the Namath flight, freshman Joe Young battled UAB's Daniel Moser, falling 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Young will meet Michael Janz of Memphis in the consolation semifinals. In the Musso flight, Mario Gutierrez of Tennessee Tech topped freshman Etham Frenkel, 6-1, 6-2, and Vanderbilt's Andy Pulido defeated Somers 6-0, 6-2. Frenkel fell to Sebastion Felt of Georgia Southern in the consolation bracket, while Somers defeated Justin Andrews of Jacksonville State, 6-2, 7-5. Somers will face Spencer Heflin of Memphis in the consolation semifinals. In doubles, Rappaccioli and Wali will face Bryan Kenyon and Axel Sundberg of Jacksonville State in the Crimson flight round of 16 on Saturday. In the doubles White flight, Young and Frenkel team up to take on Radford's tandem of Brett Cromwell and Igor Ogrizek in the round of 16, while Bernstein and Kramer-Golinkoff meet Thomas Bellman and Nenan Marcec of Jacksonville State. "We're looking forward to the doubles competition tomorrow," Booras continued. "The guys are keen on putting all this experience into play and working hard tomorrow... if the rain stays away. This is the last tournament we have this semester, so the team wants to finish strong and build off this in the off season, headed into spring." Tulane Results
