TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Jao Chi-Shan, Alex Van Vott and Dominik Koepfer of the Tulane men's tennis team each advanced into the third round of singles at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Tournament at the University of Alabama's Tennis Complex on Thursday afternoon.
"We had a good day overall with some quality wins and tough losses," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "The guys are competing very well and we are looking forward to tomorrow's singles and doubles matches."
Chi-Shan, a freshman for the Green Wave, won a pair of matches on Thursday with a 6-3, 6-3, opening round win over LSU's Eric Perez and then edged Carl Alberton of UL-Lafayette, 7-6, 7-5, in the second round.
Alex Van Cott and Koepfer, both sophomores, had first-round byes before earning second-round victories. Van Cott defeated Nicholls State's Nico Mertens, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6, while Koepfer, the 112th-ranked player in the nation, also came from behind for a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6, victory over ULL's Edgar Lopez.
"Dominik and Alex did a great job today weathering the storm in their matches coming out with some quality wins," Booras said. "Dominik was down a set and 5-2 in the second and Alex was down a set and 5-1 in the second, and both came back to win tiebreakers in the third set. That continues to show us how their competitive character is continuing to develop."
Chi-Shan, Van Cott and Koepfer will play in the round of 48 on Friday morning.
Overall Tulane posted six victories on the first day of the five-day tournament. Senior Takuma Ohashi and sophomore Ian Van Vott each won their opening-round matches before falling in the second round.
