Men's Tennis Enjoys Success On First Day At Rice Inviational

HOUSTON - Tulane men's tennis recorded six singles victories and four doubles wins on the opening day of the 2012 Hampton Inn Galleria Rice Fall Invitational at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The Green Wave were led by seniors Idan Mark and Joe Young who each earned a victory in Flight A singles and the pair teamed up to collect two doubles wins in Flight A as well. Mark defeated Texas Tech's Gabriel Wanderley, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, in singles, while Young edged Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Matt Westmoreland, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, to reach the second round.

The pair reached the finals of the Flight A doubles with an 8-4 win over Rice's Jonathan Chang and Peter Frank and an 8-2 victory over TAMCC's Peter Nagy and Oden Bertha. Mark and Young will face teammates Dominik Koepfer and Rodrigo Rappaccioli in the title match on Sunday. Koepfer and Rappaccioli defeated TAMCC Westmoreland and Guillaume Rauseo, 8-1, and got past Rice's Tommy Bennett and Adam Gustafsson, 8-5.

Freshman twins Ian and Alex Van Cott each won their first singles matches of their collegiate careers. Alex defeated New Mexico's Mitch Daniels, 6-4, 6-4, in Flight C, while Ian got past Texas Tech's Jeff Bryan, 6-0, 6-1, in the same flight. Junior Takuma Ohashi also advanced in Flight C with a 7-5, 6-1, victory over Javier Pujol of TAMCC.

Sophomore Cedric Rutsaert also earned a singles win, taking care of TAMCC's Daniel Erbacher, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, in Flight D.

The Van Cott twins also collected a doubles victory in Flight B before falling in the semifinals.



The tournament continues on Saturday afternoon with singles, while doubles resumes on Sunday.
