WEST POINT, Miss. - Michael Birtel continues to lead Tulane at the Conference USA Men's Golf Championships as the Green Wave sophomore is tied for 23rd after two rounds of the 54-hole event being played at the par 72 Old Waverly Golf Course in West Point, Miss.

Birtel shot a four-over par 76 Tuesday and has a two-day total of two-over par 146. The New Orleans native is two strokes out of the Top 20 entering the final round on Wednesday.

The Conference USA Championship is the final competition of the year for the Green Wave men's golf team, one of eight programs suspended by the university beginning next year in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Playing with a short roster of just four players and forced to count all four scores, Tulane shot a team score of 315 Tuesday and is in 12th place.

Tulane's Braden List ranks second among Wave golfers as he came in with a six-over 78 Tuesday and has a two-day total of nine-over par 153. He is tied for 49th. Freshman Nick Heather lowered his first day score by three strokes in the second round.

Houston and Memphis are tied for the team lead at 11-under par 565. Houston posted the best score of the day with a team total of 380 while first-round leader Memphis stayed in the hunt with a 289. The Cougars and Tigers own a four-stroke lead over SMU while UCF is fourth at five-under par 571. Tulsa is fifth, followed by UAB, Rice and Southern Miss.

UCF's Sonny Nimkhum and SMU's Will Dodson are tied for the individual lead after round two as both are at six-under par 138. Nimkhum fired a six-under par 66 Tuesday while Dodson tallied a 68. Zach Mowbray of Houston and Brad Benjamin of Memphis trail the duo by two strokes and are tied for third at four-under par 140. A group of five golfers is tied for fifth, including a pair of UAB golfers.

The tournament concludes Wednesday with the final 18 holes.
