New Orleans - Tulane linebacker Nico Marley has been honored as one of the top rookies on Conference USA with his selection as the 2013 C-USA Co-Freshman of the Year, as it was announced today by the league office following a vote from the conference's 14 head football coaches.
For the first time since 1999, the league's Freshman of the Year honor was shared by two players, including Marley and Marshall defensive back Corey Tindal. Marley is just the second Green Wave player to ever receive the accolade, joining Mewelde Moore who earned the award in 2000.
Marley hails from Weston, Fla., and was also named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team. This season, he has played in all 12 games with 11 starts at weak-side linebacker as a true freshman and shares the team lead in fumble recoveries (two) while sitting third with 59 tackles (31 solo), tied for third in tackles for loss (8.0), is seventh in sacks (2.0) and tied for seventh in pass break-ups (two) and has one interception and one forced fumble.
He ranks tied for 13th in C-USA in fumble recoveries per game (0.17) and 50th in tackles per outing (4.9). Marley tallied a season-high 10 tackles (seven solo) with a sack among 2.0 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery at Rice on Nov. 30. He recorded eight tackles (three solo) with 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass break-up at Louisiana Tech on Sept. 12.
Marley also logged seven stops against South Alabama (five solo with a fumble recovery, an interception and a half tackle for loss) on Sept. 7 and at FAU (seven assists with a half tackle for loss) on Nov. 2.
Tulane will conclude its season against the University of Louisiana-Lafayette in the 2013 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcast live nationally on ESPN and will also be aired around the country on ESPN Radio and locally on WMTI FM 106.1 "The Ticket."
