Senior running back Matt Forté claimed first-team All-Conference USA honors on a vote of league media members.
Nov. 27, 2007
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Five Tulane University football standouts claimed All-Conference USA honors - including first-team honoree Matt Forté - the league announced Tuesday based on the voting panel of media members from each conference city.
Forté, a senior running back from Slidell, La., is joined on the All C-USA team by senior center Aryan Barto and senior defensive tackle Antonio Harris - who claimed second-team honors - while true freshman offensive lineman Andrew Nierman and rookie defensive back Devin Holland were named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team.
Forté becomes the first Green Wave offensive player to earn first-team All C-USA honors since wide receiver Roydell Williams earned the distinction in 2004 and is the first Tulane running back to claim first-team all-league recognition since Mewelde Moore in 2003.
As a senior, Forté set Tulane single-season records with 2,127 yards and 23 touchdowns on 361 carries while ranking second on the team with 32 receptions for another 282 yards through the air. His rushing total and 177.2 rushing yards per game average ranks second in the NCAA, and he also ranks second nationally in scoring with 11.7 points per game.
Along the way, Forté eclipsed the former Green Wave single-season rushing record of 1,421 set by Mewelde Moore in 2001. His 23 touchdowns in 2007 and 44 career scores are both tops in Tulane history, and his 266 career points (44 TDs, 1 2-point PAT) ranks third in school history and tops
A two-time C-USA and Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week honoree, Forté posted five of Tulane's Top 10 single-game rushing performances in 2007, including a C-USA record 342-yard effort on Oct. 20 at SMU which also stands as the top individual rushing performance by an NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision student-athlete this season. His five touchdowns against Southeastern Louisiana and Rice are also Tulane single-game records and tie a C-USA mark.
One of the key reasons for Forté's performance in 2007 was the blocking of his offensive line where Barto helped spearhead the Green Wave charge. A senior from Houston, Texas, Barto started all 12 games this season at center and was named a game captain twice by head coach Bob Toledo and his staff.
Barto helped Tulane rush for 2,339 yards, which ranks sixth in school history, and anchored a line that allowed just 19 sacks in 184 pass attempts.
Harris claimed second-team all-league honors after posting a career-high 49 tackles (26 solo, 23 assists), six sacks and eight tackles for loss. His sack total was tied for fourth in C-USA and tied for 79th in the NCAA.
Lining up primarily at defensive tackle after spending most of his previous three seasons at end, Harris helped the Green Wave defense lead C-USA in rushing yards against - which ranks 40th nationally - second in tackles for loss - which ranks 27th in the NCAA - and fourth in total defense.
A senior from Shreveport, La., Harris had six five-plus tackle performances in 2007, including a career-high 11 tackles - including three sacks - against Southeastern Louisiana.
Nierman joined Barto on the offensive line, starting all 12 games at right guard for the Green Wave in 2007. A native of Harvey, La, and 2007 graduate of John Curtis Christian High, Nierman became the first Tulane freshman to start every game along the offensive line since 2002 when then-freshman Chris McGee started all 13 games during the Wave's run to the Hawaii Bowl.
Holland, meanwhile, played in 10 games for the Tulane in 2007, including a start as the nickel back vs. Houston on Sept. 15. The Baton Rouge, La., native and 2007 graduate of Istrouma High, posted 24 tackles on the year (16 solo, eight assists) with two pass break-ups and half a tackle for loss.
He posted a career-best five tackles (three solo, two assists) in the start vs. the Cougars, and added four stops (three solo, one assist) with a pass break-up at UAB.
