New Orleans - Tulane senior All-America placekicker Cairo Santos has been named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in the Green Wave's 45-3 victory over UTEP last week at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
This is the second weekly award of the season for Santos, who also earned the honor on Oct. 14, and also received the accolade as a junior.
A native of Brasilia, Brazil and the reigning Lou Groza Award winner, Santos registered a 39-yard field goal, his 14th of the year, and converted all six of his PATs for nine points.
Kicking to UTEP's Autrey Golden, who entered last week's game ranked 14th nationally in kickoff return average (27.9 avg.) and second with two kickoff return touchdowns, Santos limited Golden to one return on the day by sending six of his seven kickoffs into the back of the end zone. Golden finished with one return on the day for 22 yards. Santos has knocked 41 of his 54 kickoffs this season into the back of the end zone.
Santos' effort helped Tulane to its largest margin of victory on a Conference USA game, kept TU in contention for the C-USA West Division title and assured the Wave its first bowl appearance in 11 years.
Santos is one of six Green Wave players to receive the league's weekly honor this season and the group has combined to win the award eight times, including redshirt freshman quarterback Devin Powell, offense (Oct. 14), sophomore cornerback Jordan Batiste, defense (Sept. 30), sophomore cornerback Lorenzo Doss, defense (Oct. 7), senior nickleback Derrick Strozier, special teams (Oct. 7); defense (Oct. 14), junior safety Sam Scofield, defense (Oct. 28) and Santos, special teams (Nov. 25/Oct. 14).
