New Orleans - Tulane starting strong safety Sam Scofield has been recognized for his efforts in the classroom as the junior was named to the 2013 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Capital One Academic All-District 6 First Team, as it was announced today by CoSIDA.
With his All-District selection, Scofield is now eligible for CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America honors.
Scofield, who hails from Lafayette and prepped at St. Thomas More High School, has maintained a 3.74 grade point average as a finance major, and is a two-time member of the All-Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and Tulane 3.0 Club. He has twice received the C-USA Academic Medal and was selected to the C-USA All-Academic football squad as a sophomore.
On the field, Scofield has started all nine games this season for the Green Wave and leads the team in tackles with 76 (54 solo), including 8.5 stops for lost yardage, which ranks second, and he also has 1.5 sacks, seven pass break-ups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Scofield's efforts have helped Tulane to a 6-3 overall record and a 4-1 mark in C-USA play, which currently has the Green Wave in a three-way tie for first place with three games remaining in the regular season.
Two weeks ago, Scofield was named the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA)/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Defensive Player of the Week, the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week and the College Sports Madness Defensive Player of the Week after posting a career-high 18 tackles to go with a pair of pass break-ups, 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble in a 14-7 C-USA victory against Tulsa.
Scofield and the Green Wave return to action this Saturday, Nov. 9 on the road at UTSA. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. CST from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, and the game will be broadcast by WHNO-TV 20 live in New Orleans and surrounding areas of Southeast Louisiana and Southwest Mississippi.
