Senior right tackle Derek Rogers claimed his second Offensive Player of the Week honor from the team for his performance Saturday against UTEP.
Oct. 16, 2006
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Senior right tackle Derek Rogers and freshman place kicker Ross Thevenot were named the Green Wave's Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, and the duo of senior defensive tackle Taurean Brown and senior cornerback Israel Route shared Defensive Player of the Week honors, Tulane head coach Chris Scelfo announced Monday.
The Offensive Player of the Week title is the second of the season for Rogers, with the last coming on Sept. 18 for his performance against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Brown, Route and Thevenot, meanwhile, earned the honor for the first time in 2006.
A native of St. Amant, La., Rogers helped the Tulane offense post a season-highs 192 yards rushing while falling just six yards shy of totaling its highest overall offensive output of the 2006 season (481). Rogers and his O-Line mates held and opponent without a sack for the first time this season, and held UTEP without a sack for the first time in their last four games.
Rogers helped pave the way for junior running back Matt Forté to gallop for 147 yards and two touchdowns, making him the first player to post a multiple-touchdown run game since Jovon Jackson accomplished the feat on Nov. 5, 2005 vs. Navy.
Brown posted a season-best four tackles against the Miners, including a 12-yard sack. Brown helped limit UTEP to 3.75 yards per carry and kept pressure on the Miner quarterbacks all night. In his last two games, Brown has seven tackles, including four behind the line of scrimmage totaling 20 yards lost.
Route, meanwhile, tallied seven tackles, including six solo stops, Saturday night in El Paso, Texas. He also forced a fumble with a big hit on Lonre Sam in the second quarter.
Thevenot, meanwhile, tied a career-high in points with eight after making a pair of PATs and kicking a pair of field goals against the Miners. He averaged 59.8 yards on four kickoffs and put three in the endzone for touchbacks. Thevenot's two field goals were a career best as he connected from 37 yards out in the second quarter and was good for 29 yards in the third.
Brown, Rogers, Route, Thevenot and the Green Wave return to action on Saturday, Oct. 21, when they travel to Alabama to take on the Auburn Tigers at 1:30 p.m. at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Following the trip to Auburn, Tulane returns to the Louisiana Superdome for Homecoming 2006 vs. Army on Oct. 28. Tickets for those game, and future Green Wave contests, remain for sale through the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office.
